Mary Anna (Richardson) Nuban was born on August 23, 1928, the only child of Margaret and Ferdinand Richardson, and passed peacefully at home on August 18, 2020. Margaret raised Mary Anna as a single parent in Chula Vista, California, south of San Diego where they lived with Mary Anna’s great-aunt Emma. Mary Anna earned her bachelor’s degree at USC where she was first violinist in the orchestra. After graduation she took a job in Washington, D.C. Her life took a turn when her college sweetheart Ebrahim Nuban convinced her to return to California to marry him. They started a family in the Los Angeles area, and in 1960 moved the family to his home--Tehran, Iran.
Mary Anna had a wide array of international friends and enjoyed planning and hosting gourmet dinner parties. Her pies were legendary, especially her lemon meringue. She loved spending time at the Caspian Sea and would pack the station wagon with her children and friends for the 5-hour drive through the mountains from Tehran to Chalus at every opportunity. She could often be found with a book in hand, when she wasn’t playing Rummy or doing the crossword puzzle with her best friend Jean. In Tehran she worked as an executive secretary for the US Army at ARMISH/MAAG.
Divorced in 1974, She moved back to the US and worked as executive secretary to the general counsel at Fannie Mae until her retirement. Luckily, Jean had also moved to the D.C. area, and the two friends continued their outings. A few years after retiring Mary Anna relocated to Portland, Maine to be close to her daughter Rana and her family.
She is survived by three children and six grandchildren, Susanne and her husband Farhad Farjami, with sons Kian and Kamran; Rana and her husband Jerry O’Connor, with daughters Tara and Layla and son-in-law Eric Berard; and Kambiz Nuban, with son Ian and daughter Alexis.
She said she hoped to see 90; she was 5 days shy of 92 when she slipped away--gone to play cards with Jean.
