Portland-
Wendy Atwood of Portland, Maine, passed away unexpectedly, February 18 with her beloved dog Nixie by her side. Wendy was born in Norway, Maine to Richard and Roberta Atwood on March 15,1976.

Wendy grew up in Fairfield, Maine and was a 1994 graduate of Lawrence High School, where she excelled at basketball and softball. The~biggest highlight of her high school career was being a key member of the Lawrence High School Basketball Team and playing on the 1992, 1993, and 1994 State Championship teams, earning~three gold balls.~When not on the court or field, Wendy enjoyed taking part in adventures with her~sister and friends, making countless memories. Wendy also looked forward to every opportunity to switch classes with her twin sister Jill and took pride in never getting caught. After high school, she continued her love for sports at the University of New England (averaging twenty points per basketball game and having a batting average of .410 in softball). Wendy was inducted into the UNE Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Once out of college, Wendy worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the Portland area where she loved her job and was dedicated to her patients, often putting a smile on their face. Wendy loved her patients and her patients loved her. When Wendy was not at work, she could be found walking her Shiba Inus dog named Nixie and her previously Shiba Inu named Zak. Wendy's dogs were her world and she considered them her "kids". Her next biggest love was being with friends on the Bay in Portland. Wendy was a lover of the ocean and was always a welcomed member aboard several vessels in the Bay. Wendy enjoyed accompanying the Harbor Master, Kevin Battle. She also enjoyed being on Ray Card's boat, The Camelot, and listening to his band, Captain Ray's and the Castaways. Wendy made countless memories with Shannon Roy aboard her boat, the Sand Dollar, watching porpoises and learning how to use a selfie stick. She once jumped in the ocean to "save" Shannon, only to realize that the water was only waist deep. Wendy loved swimming in the ocean and was always the first one in, no matter what the temperature and loved taking her mom and family out on boat rides to share her love of the water.

Wendy's love for nature and the outdoors started at a very young age with her twin, Jill. They spent as many hours as they could outside, usually barefoot, climbing trees, hiking, swimming, skipping rocks, whitewater rafting, saving animals, playing pranks and looking for the next big adventure. She also adored her big brothers and always wanted to do everything they did, and made numerous memories with cousins down by the "creek".

Wendy is predeceased by her father, Richard Atwood. Survived by her mother Roberta Atwood of Sidney, sister Jill Sadler and her husband Dan of Sidney, brothers Mark Atwood and his wife Laura of Fairfield, Mike Atwood and his wife Tracey of Albion, Chris Frost and his wife Jennifer of Mt. Abram. Nieces and nephews include: Skye, Matt, Stephen, Asian, Kelsey, and Kayla, and Great niece Addalynn.

Wendy was known for her bright blue eyes, big smile, and kind heart. She was a true giver to this world. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her including family, friends, teammates, the yachting community, and all that she provided healthcare to. Due to Covid restrictions there will be a private family ceremony. This summer there will be a celebration of her life on the Bay in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Humane Society.
