Cumberland- Thomas Edward Cary passed away peacefully at Cedars Nursing Care in Portland, Maine on July 12, 2022.
Tom was born on March 29, 1946 in Syracuse, New York to John and Helen Wagner Cary. He was baptized and confirmed at Assumption Church, where he served as an altar boy for several years.

From an early age, Tom had an independent spirit, his own paper route, an interest in drawing, and a love for both large and small animals. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings, most especially scouting, camping, and fishing with his father. When he was a teenager the family moved to Falmouth, Maine. In his twenties, Tom married Betty Jean Percival and built his own log cabin in Cumberland, where they raised three sons and had many adventures together. As an adult, his interests expanded to include antiques, car racing, genealogy, antique cars, and hunting. Tom built many muzzleloader rifles from scratch, paying special attention to detail and functionality. He was an avid outdoorsman and went on many hunting trips with his best friend, Mike. In his later years he could often be found going on long walks with his hound dog, Jake, and enjoying rides in his Model T with Betty and the antique car group, Skillins Raiders. Throughout his entire life, Tom always maintained a positive outlook on any situation, and was always willing to help others whenever he could.

Tom is survived by his wife, Betty, the love of his life; his three children, Thomas, John (Michelle), and David (Lynne), all of whom he was very proud; his six grandchildren who he loved dearly and enjoyed spending time with, Courtney, Cayden, Thomas, Nicholas, Devin, and Zachary; brothers David (Sheri), Robert (Liz), and John (Sue); sisters Barbara (Charlie), Dianne, Margaret, and Mary (John); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Raymond.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Cedars for the years of excellent and compassionate nursing care. Tom’s suffering is over, but he will always be in our hearts and memories. An informal gathering of family and friends will be planned at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Tom’s memory by helping someone out when they need a hand.
